Adventure Series – London Ontario – Sifton Bog

A ten minute adventure to the centre of the Sifton Bog over a 370 metre long boardwalk ending at a viewing platform on Redmond's Pond. Experience the sharp contrast between the Boreal (Northern) & Carolinian (Southern) vegetation types. The Sifton Bog is home to 56 rare & unique plants as well as one of the largest deer populations in the city.

The Sifton bog began its life approximately 15,000 years ago in the Wisconsinan Period. During the glaciation, a large block of ice broke off settling into the glacial till (sand and gravel) and would later melt forming a "Kettle Lake". It is the most southerly acidic bog in Canada and one of London's unique natural areas. The Sifton Bog is recognized by the MNR as a Provincially Significant Wetland and a regionally significant Area of Natural & Scientific Interest (ANSI).

In 1957 Dr. W.W. Judd, University of Western Ontario, initiated a movement to preserve the bog. Ten years later in 1967, The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority acquired control of the bog from the Province Of Ontario (Grant) & Sifton Construction Company (Donation). It was then renamed the "Sifton (Botanical) Bog" from the "Byron Bog".

Reminder, please stay on the boardwalk at all times to protect the fragile plants & wildlife in the bog. Water levels can fluctuate throughout the year so rubber boots are needed in the spring and after summer rainstorms.
