Adventure Series - The Mill Pond EcoTrail

Looking for your next adventure ? Then, head out to The Mill Pond EcoTrail located in the town of Dorchester, Ontario.

A place of beauty & serenity, The Mill Pond changes from season to season and is great subject matter for bird watchers, photographers or visitors just wanting to enjoy the view.

The Mill Pond is home to several species of wildlife like bass, beaver, cottontails, raccoons, turtles, waterfowl and white tail deer. Over some 250 plant & 60 bird species have been noted at different locations around the pond.

Both The Mill Pond & Dorchester Swamp sit in a large "glacial spillway" - a long wide valley cut into the ground by meltwater from a retreating glacier at the end of the last Ice Age. The Dorchester Swamp is a Provincially Significant Wetland covering 548 hectares and drains into the south end of the pond.

First built in the early 1800's to power a saw mill and then re-built in 2005, the dam at the north end has transformed the glacial valley from a creek into the present day pond.

Today, a flywheel & turbine on the west side of the dam are relics of the historic saw mill. The only buildings left standing are the horse sheds, silo and wheelhouse.

The Mill Pond EcoTrail is a 3.3 km walk through a forest of black cherry and white oak. It is part of the Carolinian Canada EcoTrail Network. Permitted activities include dog walking, picnics, fishing, hiking and canoeing.

It takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to hike around The Mill Pond - it is an adventure filled trek over wooden walkways and bridges. Be sure to stop and enjoy the panoramic views from the wooden deck on the east side.

As you explore, try finding some of the well hidden GeoCaches along the trail. The three types of GeoCaches to search for are Traditional, MutliCache and EarthCache. The last two will test your knowledge about the The Mill Pond & Dorchester Swamp.

MultiCache : Mill Pond Multi ( GCQ21D )
EarthCache : Dorchester Mill Pond ( GC7DQ97 )
