Op7 Releases - The Best Of Non Copyright Music

Technically, all music is protected by copyright from the moment it is written or recorderd, rather than requiring registration. This inherent property was first accepted at the Berne Convention in 1886 and later enacted by the United States Copyright Act in 1976.

The Berne Convention mandates if such a copyright exists in any member country, then this copyright is valid in all other member countries. Today there are 175 member countries out of about 192 countries in the world.

However, it is worth noting in some countries that the courts will not enforce copyright protection if your work is not registered. Official registration will require applicable fees to the designated office, for the United States it is the "U.S. Copyright Office" and the "Canadian Intellectual Property Office" for Canada.

Today, the copyrights to most songs are owned by Recording Companies & Labels and not by the artists or song writers. As such, permission must be acquired from the copyright holder and usually involves a very hefty licence fee which can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

For Independent Content Creators, these fees can be prohibitively expensive even for the most obscure or rare music releases, not to mention a time consuming process. The legal penalties for copyright infringement may include paying an actual dollar amount for damages & profits, legal fees or prison sentence.

The solution for most is "Non Copyright Music" or "Copyright Free Music", this is music for which the legal copyright has expired naturally or intentionally allowed to expire by the copyright holder. In most countries, a copyright remains enforced for 25 to 100 years after the death of the copyright holder. After this time, it is considered part of the public domain.

NoCopyrightSounds or NCS, founded by Billy Woodford in 2011, is a United Kingdom based music organization & record label that releases "Copyright Free Music". All NCS Music Releases are free to use for Independent Content Creators and their User Generated Content (UGC) in online media platforms like YouTube & Twitch.

Alternatively, some creators choose to release their music under a Creative Commons License. This is a standardized way for creators to grant copyright permissions and gives you the legal right to use their music in your videos.
